Cave Shelters of Barranco de las Cuevas
The Abrics Rupestres de Salem (Abrics Rupestres del Barranc de les Coves) are a group of prehistoric paintings located in several shelters (caves or natural shelters) in the area. These sites are one of the most important examples of rock art in the Vall d’Albaida and the Valencian Community. They are witnesses of ancient times, in which the people who inhabited the area left their marks on the walls of the caves.
The paintings that can be found in the Salem shelters are of schematic type and represent geometric motifs and human and animal figures, such as horses, deer or other local fauna, related to the daily practices and rituals of those times. These paintings belong to the Neolithic period and are important examples of prehistoric art that has been preserved over the centuries.
