Aras de los Olmos has one of the best night skies in the Iberian Peninsula and its quality, certified as a Starlight Reserve, is only accessible to those places with the best skies, as there are only 18 of these reserves along the planet Earth.
Proof of this high quality sky is the presence of 4 astronomical observatories in the municipality, which have turned Aras de los Olmos into an important meeting place for astronomy amateurs and professionals.
The most modern of these observatories is integrated in the Big History scientific and environmental outreach center, in which its astronomy area offers visits to the planetarium and astronomical observations at night, in an idyllic setting next to the imposing
life-size replica of Losillasaurus (a dinosaur from the Jurassic period whose remains were found in Aras). The planetarium sessions offer a highly realistic simulation of the sky as seen with the naked eye, but also provide detailed images of the different planets, various space missions and everything beyond the Solar System: nebulae, clusters
of stars, galaxies, etc.As a complement to the planetarium session, visitors participate in an observation of the sky with high performance telescopes and also an interpretation of the sky with the naked eye, using a laser pointer to point out the different constellations that can be found in the sky at that time of year, always bearing in mind the slogan that defines us: “Aras de los Olmos, where the stars shine brighter”, since the quality of the sky of Aras allows the optimal vision of celestial objects that, in other places are almost inappreciable.
