València’s climate makes it possible to do sports all year round. The dry bed of the river Turia, now an extensive green space, is popular among running, athletics and cycling enthusiasts, meanwhile boating activities, water sports and yoga are concentrated around the Marina. There are public sports facilities across almost all of the city’s neighbourhoods, in addition to several indoor pools.

València also plays host to various first-class professional sporting contests. The World Motorcycle Racing Championship, held at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in nearby Cheste, is just one of many such events. Meanwhile, the Fuente de San Luis Arena is the home of the local basketball team, València Basket Club. The city also has two teams in the top flight of the Spanish football league. Both FC València, who play their home matches at the Mestalla stadium, and Levante UD, the oldest of the two, have a strong following.

The city’s marathon, half marathon and triathlon are among its most celebrated athletics events, though there are many high profile road races held throughout the year. In addition, there are some excellent local courses set in the most beautiful of surroundings for golf lovers to enjoy. Pilota, a traditional handball sport with historical ties to the city, is also popular.
